Happy World Wildlife Day!

Vanessa Timmer and Dagmar Timmer are honoured to be among the 75 inaugural members of Nature Canada’s Women for Nature initiative who have pledged to make a difference, and work together to leave a legacy of respect for Canada’s great natural heritage.

Members include the Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell (Lieutenant Governor of Ontario), Senator Nancy Greene Raine, author Margaret Atwood and Member of Parliament Elizabeth May.

The Women for Nature initiative brings together the leadership, knowledge, experience and passion of amazing women across Canada who are committed to nature. Having reached the goal of 75 members in time for Nature Canada’s 75th anniversary, the Women for Nature members have set an ambitious goal to be 150 women strong by Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017.

“This is an opportunity to celebrate a diverse group of women who have chosen to join Nature Canada in championing nature,” said Eleanor Fast, Executive Director of Nature Canada. “These women are incredibly influential and they are at the heart of our efforts to engage and empower Canadians to save species, protect habitats and connect children to nature.”

Nature Canada was founded in 1939 because of the passion and initiative of Mabel Frances Whittemore, a teacher and nature lover whose main goal in life was to share her passion for nature with others. Today, Nature Canada represents a network of more than 45,000 members and supporters and more than 350 nature organizations across the country and with affiliates in every province. Over the past 75 years, Nature Canada has helped protect over 63 million acres of parks and wildlife areas in Canada and countless species that depend on this habitat as well as engage hundreds of thousands of Canadians in nature through its activities.

Voices of New Economies - October

10/19/2014

One Earth launched the
Voices of New Economies story series within Cities for People, as part of New Economy Week 2014, hosted by the New Economy Coalition. Throughout this week, a series of 5 questions guided our exploration of what it would take to build the economy we need - one that works for people, place, and planet. The Voices of New Economies series is collectively curated by One Earth and The Canadian CED Network.

During New Economy Week, we heard from community leaders across Canada on these five questions:
1. Carol Anne Hilton - How can we honour and learn from the rich histories of communities building New Economy Institutions on the frontlines of fights for racial, economic, and environmental justice?
2. Vanessa Timmer -  How can we catalyze public conversation about the need for systemic change and the viability of economic alternatives that put people and the planet first?
3. Lucy Gao – How can we connect and learn from successful experiments, pilot projects, and campaigns to build broad-based power and effect deep transformation at scale?
4. Marianne Jurzyniec – How do we transition to a renewable economy without leaving the workers, young people, and communities most impacted by extractive industries behind?
5. Sean Geobey - How can we support neighborhoods, cities, towns, and regions as the fertile ground for the kind of economy we need?

Collaborative Economy Tour

1/29/2014

Picture
One Earth Executive Director, Vanessa Timmer, is touring the country with April Rinne, Chief Strategy of Collaborative Lab, to shed light on the collaborative economy (or "the sharing economy").  The collaborative economy has the potential to transform the way we design products and services, create sustainable and "shareable" cities, re-imagine public services, reduce waste and connect communities. The tour is part of the launch of Cities for People, a Canada-wide initiative to create more resilient and livable cities.  April Rinne's national speaking tour is co-sponsored by Social Innovation Generation (SiG). Using a wide array of innovative examples from around the world -- from transportation to office space to food to education – she will show us how we can use technology and human ingenuity to unlock the wealth that exists in people, places and resources to develop scalable solutions to many of our pressing challenges and to improve social outcomes. Tickets to the public event in Vancouver (13 February, 5:30-9pm) are available here.

Vanessa is back in Nairobi, Kenya for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Governing Council as the North American civil society representative. It is a historic occasion because it’s the 40th anniversary of the founding of UNEP – all of the past Executive Directors are returning to review our collective progress over the past 40 years. Vanessa is joining in this dialogue and helping to shape civil society engagement in the UN.
